The Malta
Freediving Club.
Founded in 2010 by Luke and a small group of emerging freedivers, to create a community around their love for the sea and to grow the sport locally through shared expertise
Before there
were schools.
Back then, freediving in Malta was very different from what it is today. There were no local freediving instructors, no established schools, and very little organised training available. What existed was a small community of enthusiasts eager to learn, explore, and share knowledge.
Before becoming a certified instructor, Luke was already introducing people to freediving, organising training sessions, and helping newcomers discover the sport. Everything was done voluntarily — driven purely by passion for the ocean and a belief that Malta and Gozo could become world-class freediving destinations.
"There were no local instructors, no established schools… what existed was a small community of enthusiasts." — Luke
A community that kept growing.
As the community grew, so did the club. Luke later became a professional freediving instructor and continued teaching, while the club remained a volunteer organisation dedicated to promoting freediving, safety, exploration, and community.
Volunteer at heart, professional in the water.
The club's purpose never changed, even as freediving in Malta matured around it: promote the sport, keep it safe, explore further, and bring people together. Luke's path into professional instruction grew out of the same community — and fed back into it.

Still growing.
Today, the Malta Freediving Club remains active and continues to thrive thanks to the dedication of its members and committee. Benji is an active committee member and plays an important role in helping organise events and support the club's activities, alongside a team of passionate volunteers.
More than a decade after its founding, the club stays true to its original purpose: to promote freediving, encourage exploration, build community, and share the unique beauty of Malta and Gozo with anyone willing to take a breath and dive beneath the surface.
For us, freediving has never been just a sport. It is a way of connecting with the sea, with nature, and with one another. The Malta Freediving Club is where that journey began — and it's the same spirit we carry into Gozo Freedivers today.
